Dhanteras 2020: Dhantrayodashi Puja Vidhi

Dhantrayodashi, also known as ‘Dhanteras’ brings you the opportunity to attain prosperous well-being. Here Dhan‘ means money and ‘Teras‘ means the 13th day. Each year, the festival of five days that is Diwali commences with the celebration of Dhanteras. The festival is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight) in the Kartik Maas (month). This festival is also known as Dhanvantari Trayodashi or Dhantrayodashi because of the same reason. According to the Hindu Calendar, Dhanteras falls during the Gregorian months of October-November. The festival of Dhantrayodashi must be really important that marks the beginning of the most important Hindu festival, Diwali.

Relation of Dhanteras with Diwali

Since Diwali is a festival that marks the spreading of light into the darkness of worldly matters; it gives Dhanteras a portion of its importance, just for the reason of being associated with it. Dhanteras is the first day of the grand Diwali festival that lasts for a period of five auspicious days. Hence, one can also say that Dhanteras is the grand opening of the five-day festivity of Diwali.

Significance of Dhantrayodashi 

Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day Diwali Festival which is celebrated in India. According to astrology the word “Dhan” means wealth and “Teras” means 13th day as per Hindu calendar is called Dhantrayodashi. It is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of Krishna paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik. 

It is believed that on Dhanteras, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped to provide prosperity and good health. Dhanteras holds special importance and significance for the business community due to the customary purchases of precious metals on this day. Lord Kubera, the God of assets and wealth is also worshipped on this festival.

Celebration of Dhanteras

The Festival of Dhantrayodashi is celebrated across the country with a lot of joy and enthusiasm. This celebration is mainly celebrated in the Hinduism community. On this day, Goddess Laxmi is worshipped along with Lord Ganesha and Kuber. 

On the day of Dhantrayodashi during the Pradosh Kaal, it is believed that donating lamps to Lord Yamraj will bring auspiciousness to the devotee and your kins. If the Triyodashi Tithi extends till the next day after sunrise, then the Dhanteras is to be celebrated on that day only.

Dhantrayodashi Puja Vidhi

The festival of Dhanteras brings good health, wellbeing and an abundance of happiness. Dhanteras is celebrated to attain long life, full of success, wealth and luxury. 

  • On the day of Dhanteras,it is believed that  Lord Dhanvantari appeared from the churning of sea with the Amrit Kalash, after drinking Amrit, the person will become immortal . Shodashopachara is a ritual that contains 16 different procedures of worship followed by the people to worship Goddess Laxmi and Lord Dhanvantari ,father of Ayurveda. This includes Aasan, Padya, Arghya, Aachaman (scented drinking water), bathe, clothing, jewelry, scents (saffron and sandalwood), flowers, dhoop, deep, Naivaidya, Aachman (pure water), betel leaf containing the offerings, Aarti, and parikrama.
  • On the day of Dhanteras puja, it’s a ritual to buy silver and gold utensils. It is known that these utensils play a major role in bringing prosperity to one’s household.
  • With the help of Lights and lamps decorate the front gate and open areas of the house on this festival, as it marks the oncoming event Diwali.
