Sharad Purnima 2020: Importance of Sharad Purnima

Sharad Purnima is celebrated on a full moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin, which is also known as Kojaagri Purnima. It is also known as the ‘Kaumudi’ (moonlight) celebration.  Purnima’ is a Nepali word that means full moon. On this day, Moon comes out with all its 16 Kalas. In astrology, it is believed that each Kala represents one human quality and of all these 16 Kalas makes a perfect personality. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born with all the sixteen Kalas.

As per the Hindu lunar calendar, all Purnima dates are important. But, Sharad Purnima holds great significance among all the Purnima dates. This day carries huge religious importance because Goddess Lakshmi was born on this day.

Date of Sharad Purnima 2020

This year Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on 30th October 2020 (Friday). Sharad Purnima is celebrated on Ashwin Purnima falling during the night. If Sharad Purnima falls on two days and falls or does not fall during night then it is celebrated on the second day. Devotees observe a long day fast on this day and after listening to the Katha and performing puja they all break their fasts.

Significance of Sharad Purnima

The Harvest festival is celebrated on Sharad Purnima,  It marks the end of the monsoon season. There is a traditional celebration of the moon and is also called the ‘Kaumudi celebration’, which means ‘moonlight’ as only once a year Moon rises after 16 days, generally it is 15th  day is purnima .The moon rays are considered very auspicious as it has miraculous healing powers that is why Kheer made up of rice and milk is kept whole night under moon light and eaten next day. It is also believed that on this day as the moon and the earth are very close to each other. In  Purnima Vrat ,Goddess Laxmi of wealth is worshipped and married women keeps the purnima fast for the well being of the family and wealth. The celebration of this auspicious festival is also associated with Lord Krishna. For a worshiper, this day is like a shield of protection from mother nature. An individual can receive an abundance of blessings from the god.

Importance of Sharad Purnima

Sharad Purnima festival signifies the harvest (Sharad) season and it is also said that this day can also bring good luck and fortune to those who pray to Goddess Laxmi. It is said that those girls who want to get married should pray to the Sun and the Moon on this day if they want a perfect man as their life partner. It is said that those who pray to Lord Krishna and Goddess Laxmi at this festival will get both wealth and love. It is said that on this particular day, the Goddess Laxmi especially comes to Earth to bless all those who pray to her.

Sharad Purnima Vrat (Fast)

(For the fulfillment of wishes and for the protection of children)

According to the Astrologers, the full Moon of Sharad Purnima is the most powerful Moon of the year, so on this day fast should be observed and different Gods and Goddesses especially Goddess Mahalaxmi should be worshipped.

Method of Observing Sharad Purnima Vrat

This fast is observed on the Purnima of the bright half of Hindi month Ashwin.

  • After having a bath, worship Goddess Laxmi by performing Shodashopchar Puja and recite Sri Sukta 16 times.
  • Read Sharad Purnima Vrata Katha and at night mix sugar in the milk of cow and keep it under the rays of Moon.
  • Offer Sugar mixed milk to Goddess Laxmi . One should chant Bhajans and do kirtan whole night.
