It is described in the vedas:

Puroshottama masaye devtam puroshottama l

Tasmat sampujet bhaktaya shradhaye puroshottamam ll

A devotee prays to his lord with immense devotion in this holy month and lord Krishna himself appoints him in his and Radha Rani’s service.

Adhika maas, the most pious, immensely auspicious, highly benefic month also known as the Mal Maas, or purushottama maas is considered dear to the supreme Lord Shri Krishna, who blessed the month to be as good as him. The pious month of puroshottama can bring the ultimate spiritual benefits to the devotees.

The absolute personality of Lord Krishna can be described with innumerable names in the scriptures. The Brihad Vishnu Sahastranaam strotra depicts his 1000 names and the mostly known vedic scripture “Srimad Bhagwad Gita” describes him as puroshottama.

Scientific meaning of Adhika Maas

The significance or glories of puroshottama maas is still unknown to many and so it still stands in darkness as it comes after every 32 months. “Sri surya siddhanta ” explains that there are 1,593,336 extra months on 51,840,000 solar months in one mahayug. Hence there comes one extra months after every 32 months. 16 days and 4 hours of solar calendar. Thus, one lunar year lags behind the solar year and one adhika maas had to be added after every three years to align the lunar year and solar year. As the foundation of our calendar is based on the phases of the moon, the transits takes 354 days and eight hours, 34.28 seconds. It brings a difference of 10 days, 21 hours, 44 minutes and 2.865 seconds, so an adhika maas is added which carries the name of the previous or the next month’s depending upon the proximity of the month.

Foundation of Adhika Maas

According to hindu lore, each of the 12 months were represented by a god but adhika mass was sidelined who was called the mal mass or malimmucha. The adhika mass went to Lord Vishnu and sought refuge. Lord Vishnu took pity and assigned himself to adhika maas and thus named it Puroshottama maas.

In this month, we should worship our spiritual masters and Lord Krishna to benefit ourselves lakhs times than in normal days, that is one more reason to name is Adhika maas as we get “Adhika” benefits out of our worships in this month. In this holy month the significance of fasting, worshipping and donations are very important, hence we all should do these things with utmost devotion to fulfil all our desires.

Fasting and Resolutions taken by devotees in Adhika Maas

  1. Wake up early in the “Brahma” muhurt i.e. 04:10 to 04:58 and perform ablution and perform a sodashopachara pooja to the idols of Radha-Krishna or Laxmi-Narayan.
  2. Increase the number of your name recitation or “jaap maala”.
  3. Prayers
  • Morning: Shri Radha Madhav
  • Afternoon : Shri Cauragraganya Ashtakam
  • Once a day: Shri Nand-Nandan Ashtakam, Shri Jagannath Ashtakam, Shri Sachisut Ashtakam ( Any one).
  1. Recite this mantra thrice, three times a day given by Kaundinye muni

Goverdhan dharam vande gopalam gop rupinam l

Gokulotsav mishanam govindam gopika priyam ll

  1. Read chapter-15 of Shrimad Bhagwatam gita daily.
  2. Read skand-10, chapter-14 “ Stuti of Lord Krishna by Brahmaji” daily.
  3. Limit your food intake and eat only fruits and food grains.
  4. Practice Brahmacharya in this holy month.
  5. Donate some part of your income, spiritual books, food and other religious things.
  6. Offer holy basil “tulsi” and lotus to the supreme Lord Krishn.
  7. Take bath in holy rivers is significantly important, you cant use some gangajal at home to take bath.

Benefits of Adhik Maas

  1. Observing a fast in this month is condidered equivalent to performing hundreds of yagnas and results into the attainment of happiness, harmony and peace.
  2. There are many purposes of fasting and appeasing the dieties; fulfilment of desires, acquiring health and wealth, get blessings, to procreate, and assistance to over difficult times.
  3. Eliminating the miseries of life and escaping the cycle of rebirth.
  4. The malefic effects in horoscopes can be countered by performing grah dosh or specific nivaran pooja in this month.
  5. Selfless acts adds to spiritual merit of devotee.
  6. Pilgrimages during this period is beneficial
  7. Religious rituals in this month washes away the sins of people that thay accumulated over the years.
